Requirements:

Notice: XBMC on iOS is a work in progress. The available versions are the Cydia build and the latest nightly build. The Cydia build installs an older version of XBMC and anything else XBMC needs to run. The latest nightly contains the most recent XBMC code and is created daily by an automated build bot. First install the Cydia build then install the nightly build. Do not use the Cydia build without updating to the nightly builds as it is no longer supported.

Installing from Cydia

After XBMC is successfully installed, the ATV2 will restart, and XBMC should then be available as an option in the ATV2's main menu
This is the same build installed from the nitoTV menu, if installed.

To install the Cydia build:

  1. Open up your terminal/ssh application and enter the following command to log in to your ATV2:
    ssh [email protected]
  2. You will be asked for a password: default password is alpine
  3. Continue to enter the following commands:
  4. Issue these commands in your Terminal window, in sequence:
    apt-get install wget
    wget -O- http://apt.awkwardtv.org/awkwardtv.pub | apt-key add -
    echo "deb http://apt.awkwardtv.org/ stable main" > /etc/apt/sources.list.d/awkwardtv.list
    echo "deb http://mirrors.xbmc.org/apt/atv2 ./" > /etc/apt/sources.list.d/xbmc.list
    apt-get update
    apt-get install org.xbmc.xbmc-atv2
    reboot
  5. Proceed to install the latest nightly build below:

Installing the latest nightly build

Here's an example of a successful install (where the ATV2 had an IP of 192.168.1.100 and the .deb package file was from Sept 10)
Change history: trac timeline or commit history

NOTE: You MUST install the Cydia version before you can install a nightly build. You only need to install the Cydia version once and you don't need to uninstall previous versions to upgrade (or downgrade) XBMC.

  1. Open http://mirrors.xbmc.org/nightlies/darwin/atv2/ in a web browser and copy the url of the most recent file in that listing. For example it will look something like "wget http://mirrors.xbmc.org/nightlies/darwin/atv2/xbmc-20111018-832ca62-master-atv2.deb".
  2. In that url you just copied, make note of the file name after "../atv2/". For example it will look something like "xbmc-20111018-832ca62-master-atv2.deb".
  3. Open up your terminal/ssh application and enter the following command to log in to your ATV2:
    ssh [email protected]
  4. You will be asked for a password: default password is alpine
  5. If you installed the Cydia version before November 26th, and have not manually installed UpdateBeGone, then you will need to issue this command (You only need to install UpdateBeGone once, so for future nightly updates you can skip this step). If you can't remember if it is installed, it is safe to enter the command again to make sure it is installed:
    apt-get install com.nito.updatebegone
  6. Continue to enter the following commands:
    wget URL-FROM-STEP-ONE-HERE
    dpkg -i FILENAME-FROM-STEP-TWO-HERE
    rm FILENAME-FROM-STEP-TWO-HERE
  7. You should now have the latest nightly build of XBMC for ATV2.

Note: If the dpkg -i command hangs, stop it with CTRL+C so it can use the updated removal script in the new package. If that doesn't work, you'll need to manually remove the XBMC directory before installing the nightly, e.g. "rm -r /Applications/XBMC.frappliance" (will likely take 2 tries).
