Apple TV (iOS)
|Devices||iOS||Apple TV (iOS)|
- This is the page for the iOS Apple TV (2nd gen and black). For the original (1st gen) silver version see: Apple TV 1
Starting with the second generation, the Apple TV moved to an ARM-based platform running iOS. Like other iOS devices, the Apple TV 2 was eventually jailbroken and could run third party applications. In 2011 XBMC was ported to iOS, making the Apple TV 2 the first officially supported ARM device for XBMC, and broke the $100 barrier for new XBMC hardware. While today there are many more low-powered/ARM devices that can also run XBMC (mainly Android based), the Apple TV 2 still runs the latest XBMC builds.
To date, the Apple TV 3 (1080 version) has not been jailbroken yet.
1 Installing XBMC
- To Install XBMC on ATV2 you must have a jailbroken Apple TV 2 running versions 4.1 to 5.3
- XBMC only works on the second generation Apple TV (ATV2), which is the black version that outputs 720p. XBMC does not work on the newer third generation Apple TV (ATV3) that outputs 1080p (Full HD), because there is no jailbreak for the ATV3.
